Bad News Bears comes to the soccer world. Phil Weston (Will Ferrell)was raised by a very domineering father, Buck Weston (Robert Duvall). When his dad gets married again they both have children at the same time. Buck gives his grandson Sam to another soccer team because he isn't too good. That team needs a coach and Phil takes it on, and they get beat in his first game 14 - 0 by his father.
Phil get help coaching from a neighbor, Mike Ditka, who hates Buck. one of the first things they do is to recruit some ringers. With the new Italian brothers they begin to win.
Buck keeps up the kidding. "What do you call it when you almost win. Oh yea. Losing." Father and son have a bet. If Buck's team wins Phil will go to work for Buck. If Phil's team wins then he gets his father's souvenir Pele ball.
Phil soon drops to his dad's level. If you touch the ball pass it to the Italians. If you can hurt the kids on the other team do it. Only winners should be on the field. Soon all the fun is gone. Winning is everything. Soon his own son is riding the bench.
The final game arrives. Phil is out of his mind. By half time he realizes what he has been doing. He starts his son for the second half and he sits the Italians. Of course in the best Hollywood tradition the kids play better and win the game on Sam's goal with seconds to go.
Although it is a comedy the movie does points out the craziness that has invaded youth sports in America.
