The Game of Their Lives (2005)
Also called The Miracle Match, the movie is based a true story, set in 1950 with a bunch of mostly Italian Americans playing soccer for their club team in St. Louis. Word comes that there is going to be a tryout for an American team that will travel to Brazil, to play the best team in the world, the English, in the World Cup.
The movie covers the trials and tribulations that the team goes through as they try to get competitive. The St. Louis players have trouble getting along with the "outsiders" from the rest of the country.
When they scrimmage a second level English traveling team they get beat up, so things are not looking too good for them, but as the game approaches the team begins to pull things together. The US team was listed as a 500 - 1 underdog in the game (although in the movie it says the match was so lopsided odds weren't even posted.)
When the game the Americans, beat England 1-0 in the city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil before a crowd of 10,000. The American goalie was pressured all game but kept making save after save.
The movie was pretty decent but could have been much better. For some reason it just wasn't as exciting as it should have been.
