The Year My Parents Went On Vacation (2006)

It's 1970 and Mauro's parents did really go on vacation. They were fleeing from the current dictatorship in Brazil. Mauro gets left off with his grandfather, but unfortunately his grandfather had died that day. So Mauro ends up staying with Slomo and the local Jewish community.
But Mauro's father said he would be back before the World Cup, and Mauro is looking forward to cheering for Pele and the Brazilian team. The big question on the radio, TV and in the cafes is whether Pele ans Tostao can play together.
On the third of June, 1970 all of Brazil grounded to a halt. Brazil was going to play in the World Cup against Czechoslovakia. Mauro waited in Slomo's apartment for his parents. They said they would be back. Brazil wins game one, but no parents. Mauro joins some of his new friends to watch a local club play an Italian club. Meanwhile Brazil keeps winning in the World Cup.
Brazil ends up playing Italy in the finals, but Mauro looks out the window for his parents. Pele heads one in but Italy ties it up. Then Brazil scores again. Mauro sees Slomo and follows him to the apartment. His mother is there, but his father is not. Brazil wins the World Cup.
A very good movie , as much about the state of politics in Brazil in 1970 as it was about soccer.
