Soccer Days (2003)

Also called Dias du futbol, it is the story of six friends who once won a soccer tournament together. Antonio is just out of prison and determined to change his ways. he wants to study psychology as he hopes to understand his violent ways. he also begins to see faults in all of his friends. He decides that they should take part in a seven man soccer tournament so that his brother-in-law Jorge, whose wife, his sister, has just run off with another man. He decides that by winning something, Jorge will gain confidence and be able to rebuild his life. The guys agree to join the team.
After working out for five minutes the guys are ready to pass out. Antonio decides that they should call their team Brazil. When they play their first game they are horrible.
For Antonio it is simple. If they can win at soccer his loser friends can turn their lives around. The movie is mostly about the terrible relationships these six guys are involved in. Maybe if they are successful in soccer they will become successful in life? When they get one of their cousins to ref the game they finally win one and all of a sudden all their lives seem to get better.
The movie goes on too long but it is funny and quirky. It is an adult comedy about adults wanting to reclaim the lost innocense of their youth through soccer.
