Sixty Six (2006)

Bernie Reubens is a fifteen year old Jewish boy growing up in England in 1966. The one thing that he is looking forward to is his bar mitzvah. He is desperately hoping and planning to have a lavish affair that will be better than the one his older brother Alvie had, but Bernie is having no luck.
First another grocery store moves in next to where his father's in and begins to drive his father out of business. Next he finds out that the finals for the World Cup is scheduled for the same day as his but as his bar mitzvah. If England is in the finals he is sure no one will come to his bar mitzvah. Then his house burns down.
The one thing he has going for him, as the plans for his affair get cheaper and cheaper, is that the English are a big underdog. But as the games go by England keeps winning and Bernie gets more and more worried. Mexico, France and Portugal all bite the dust and England makes it to the finals against all odds. Everyone is thrilled; except Bernie.
The phone begins to ring as the excuses for not coming to the bar mitzvah begin to come in. But as the day comes Bernie his Dad make a connection and leave the lame party, head to the stadium and take part in one of English soccer's greatest days.
Not a lot of soccer action, but a really good movie.
