Offside (2005)

"In Iran, women are officially banned from men's sporting events.

In June of 2005, Iran defeated Bahran to qualify for the World Cup.

Major portions of this film were shot during that game."

Inspired by the day when his own daughter was refused entry to a soccer stadium in Iran, Jafar Panahi's Offside follows a day in the life of a group of Iranian girls attempting to watch their team's World Cup qualifying match against Bahrain at the stadium in Tehran.
The movie follows a girl trying to get in to the game. She gets caught at the gate. She gets taken up on top of a roof and put in a pen with other girls. They can hear the sounds of the games going on.
The guards start to talk to the girls. They are all missing the game. One soldier is persuaded into shouting out the highlights of the game as he watches through a gate. he then has to escort one of the girls to the bathroom. He makes a mask of cardboard player's poster for his prisoner, and then he has to get all the men out of the bathroom. The girl then escapes in to the stadium.Another girl gets brought in - she was disguised as a soldier.
As the game nears it's end, the girls are put in a van to be transported to jail, along with another young man with firecrackers. The soldier in charge is persuaded to turn on the radio so they can hear the final moments of the game on the way and, when Iran defeats Bahrain to win the qualifying match, everyone celebrates.
Probably a better women's lib movie, than a soccer movie, but still a very good movie that shows the excitement that soccer brings all over the world.
